Annual Family Picnic . August 3, 2024.
The Slippery Rock Park Civic Association was formed in 1953 for the purpose of assisting with the social, economic, and recreational “good” of the community. Initially, the purpose of the Assocation was to raise money to build the current dam located by route 173. Prior to the building of the dam, there was a wooden dam that failed. The creek was reduced to a muddy, very piddly, small stream.
Many people, especially the developer, Ralph Nicholas sr. worked tirelessly to bring the cement dam into existence, thus permitting 4.5 miles of navigable water for motor boats, especially the most popular, pontoon boat, and non-motorized canoes and kayaks. They built this dam very well, fortunately, and it is inspected every five years. If we were to lose the dam again, it is extremely unlikely we would be able to replace it. This puts tremendous responsibility on keeping the current dam with all the recreational, social, and economic benefits to all the residents. Our community is well sought for property. Many people are looking and waiting years to have a place come available. The current Association actively supports the social, recreational, and economic benefits for our community. The Association maintains the boat launch, the Beach area, litter removal, creek cleanup, and participated with the Township in keeping out community a desirable place.
And probably the biggest reason one should belong to the Association is the dues are $25/year. Yes, just $25/year. By becoming a member, your small amount grows large and provided needed maintenance of the boat launch, the beach, signage around the Park, creek cleanup and the ever popular Annual Corporation Meeting and Family Picnic. Regardless of paying membership, one benefits from the Association, but surely being a member brings with it pride of participation in a very worthy Association, our Community.
